Building The Narrative

I do, in fact, frequent the world of narrative design. Whether that be through written works, graphics or drawing, I try to show a unique side of things.

The Forest

An experimental world I’ve been dabbling with, The Forest is a story that takes place on the continent of Ry’leth. The planet itself is a shell for a creature that breathes out magic, so the people have a connection with the ground and rarely leave it. The entire middle part of Ry’leth dips down into a craterous forest and, being closer to the slumbering beast in the planets core, it full of unique and magical creatures created by the planets breath. No two animals are alike and the protagonist, an explorer from our world, identifies each by the Terran animal it reminds them of most.

I wanted to try a fantasy setting but with my own spins on it. Firstly, the whole “Dragons are this” or “Trolls are that” trope bores me, so having each animal be a species unique to itself means that there is an infinite amount of creativity and exploration to be had. Secondly, I wanted a protagonist who, despite finding themselves in a place they don’t know, is ready. I wanted a setting for a character who, even though they’re afraid, can tie their hair back and get to work by being clever and resourceful from the get go.

WayStone

A pixel art world I created and animated for a game. The story follows a Golem named Colm who explores an empty world looking for his purpose. Unfortunately, that world is inhabited by snails, a Golems natural predator. The only way he can make it through to his undiscorvered meaning is with the help of his surprisingly destructive friend the “Waystone”. This orb of magic stone is inert by itself, but will always find its way back to Colm, even if that means barreling through some snails on the way.

With Waystone I wanted to explore the idea of a world in which someone feels they have nobody to support them so they turn to the items around them. A lot of times your biggest supporter in life is some family heirloom or a gift from a friend. Giving that item life like in Waystone makes it interesting to imagine how your “Waystones” could help you if they became more animated.
